The purpose of this programme is to capacitate the participants with the required knowledge and practical experience to be able to interpret and apply the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 and its attending regulations; SANS 17020 conformity system and the Department of Employment and Labour requirements for the approval of Approved Inspection Authorities. 

Specifically, the Department of Employment and Labour directs that all practicing occupational hygiene professionals, within South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) 17020-accredited Approved Inspection Authorities (AIAs) be in possession of a valid Legal Knowledge Course certificate. The course is facilitated and coordinated by Dr O Rikhotso, an award-winning SAIOH-registered Occupational Hygienist.

Upon on completion participant will be able to:  

  • Describe, explain and apply the various sections of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 including the General Administrative Regulations.
  • Describe, explain and apply the various regulations and sub regulations of the Facilities Regulations, 2004. The link between the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 and regulations will also be described.
  • Describe, explain and apply the various regulations and sub regulations of the General Safety Regulations, 2003. The link between the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 and regulations will also be described.
  • Describe, explain and apply the various regulations and sub regulations of the Noise-Induced Hearing Loss Regulations, 2003. The link between the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 and regulation will also be described.
  • Describe, explain and apply the various regulations and sub regulations of the Environmental Regulations for Workplaces, 1987. The link between the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 and regulation will also be described.
  • Describe, explain and apply the various regulations and sub regulations of the Ergonomics Regulations. The link between the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 and regulation will also be described.
  • Describe and discuss the SANS 17020:2012 “conformity assessment – requirements for the operation of various types of bodies performing inspection” pertaining to general requirements.
  • Describe and discuss the requirements for the approval as an Occupational Hygiene Approved Inspection Authorities: Occupational Health and Hygiene brochure as well as the auditing process for approval employed by the Department of Employment and Labour.

  • Entry Requirements

    A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Safety Management, Occupational Health Nursing, Medical degree, and an equivalent qualification in the health sciences.
