The purpose of this is to equip the government officials responsible for the GIAMA asset management processes, with a step-by-step approach to conduct efficient and effective immovable asset assessments and asset management planning in the public sector. The programme is facilitated by both academics and industry experts to ensure that participants are equipped with the relevant skills and knowledge.

It will be made up of 5 single modules, divided into two phases. The first three modules prepare the participants to perform condition and performance assessment on the assets and last two prepares the participants to develop the strategic asset management plan. The first phase will consist of 3 modules with 248 hours of learning and participants must submit a Portfolio of Evidence (POE) and assignments.

The second phase of the programme consists of 2 modules with 208 hours of learning and participants must submit a POE and assignments.Upon successful completion of the programme participants will obtain a TUT Certificate of Competence with 15 CPD points through SAAMA/ ECSA

By successfully completing this training programme you will gain skills and knowledge necessary for effective Maintenance Planning and learn how to:

  • Have a good understanding of the immovable asset management definition structure, asset classifications and the public works asset management framework.
  • Understand the life cycle and asset life principles and be knowledgeable about the basic maintenance principles and meaning.
  • Have a good understanding of building construction and the elements and components of a building asset.
  • Understand what an asset register is and the advantages of an asset register.
  • Understand the condition assessment process in terms of the preparation, execution and assessment management and what is expected of the team leader of the assessors.
  • Be able to identify different facility types, different building asset types, different building elements and different site asset types.
  • Learn how to apply all the principles to calculate the replacement values of buildings with different shapes, rates, quality and density properties.
  • Learn how to apply condition assessment information and best practice maintenance guidelines to calculate maintenance budgets for assets.
  • Understand the GIAMA requirements in terms of the objectives, functions and responsibilities of the custodians and users.
  • Understand the UAMP planning, budgeting, and preparation process.

  • Who should attend?

    Built environment tradespeople aspiring to pursue a career in asset assessment and asset management. Supervisors and Asset Management Practitioners with no formal Asset Assessment and Asset Management certification. Built environment professionals with no formal asset management certification.

  • Entry Requirements

    To register for this programme, you must meet one of the following minimum requirements:
    • Matric level mathematics, or
    • 3 years’ asset assessment or asset management experience, or
    • A qualified Artisan, or
    • A certified Built Environment Practitioner.

  • Delivery Mode

    Contact delivery, with the option to revert to virtual delivery, should be used if geographical accessibility and/ or restrictions require it. The module G3 will require an additional 16 hours. All contact classes will be delivered at the client’s premises or at the TUT training facilities.
